What Are Essential Oils
Maybe you have been hearing the buzz about Essential Oils and thought to yourself, what are they? How will I know how to use them? What can I use them for? Do they really work? That’s where I step in, I’m here to help you on your Essential Oil journey.
If you have ever peeled an orange and smelled the wonderful spray from the peel, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, or cold pressed from the rind of fruit. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. Essential oils protect plants from predators, decay and are essentially the immune system of the plant. The oils have been used for thousands of years, but now with modern technology we can extract the natural defenses of the plant, put them in bottles and use them for our benefit.
Aren’t all Essential Oils the same? Nope. I don’t know about you but I only want to put the best, most tested and trusted oils on my kiddos. Before I used doTERRA I thought lavender was lavender. It never occurred to me that where the plant was grown or how pure the oil was played a role.
Something that shocked me was there is no governing body regulating Essential Oils. So this means you can hop on down to your local health food store and pick up a bottle of “100% Pure” Essential Oil and it could contain a small percentage of actual Essential Oil and the rest could be fillers or synthetic. doTERRA was created by a few super passionate people who wanted to make the world’s best essential oils and that’s exactly what they have done.
When you choose doTERRA, you are choosing essential oils gently and carefully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy.
Each doTERRA essential oil is also carefully and thoroughly tested using the strict CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® quality protocol. They are free of chemicals, pesticides and heavy metals. So parents around the world can feel comfortable using these amazing oils with their family.
HOW DO I USE ESSENTIAL OILS?
Using the oils aromatically can help uplift mood, provide respiratory support, cleanse the air and make your home smell amazing, without the use of chemicals. To use aromatically put a drop of essential oil in the palm of your hands, rub together and cup your nose and inhale. Using a diffuser is one of my favorite ways to use the oils, this way our whole family can benefit from their therapuetic benefits.
Essential oils are 50-70 times more powerful than herbs so 1 drop goes a long way. Topical application is a very effective method for applying essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localized benefit. When using the oils topically it’s always advisable to use several small doses throughout the day rather than a single large dose. Start with the lowest possible dose (1–2 drops). To decrease the likelihood of developing a skin sensitivity, especially on young or sensitive skin, it is advisable to use a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil) to dilute more potent oils and when trying an oil for the first time. The recommend dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil, for children under three use more carrier oil.
Essential oil contributes many health benefits as well as flavoring and aroma properties to foods. When in their concentrated form, essential oils can be used as dietary supplements for more targeted and potent health benefits. Internal use is a very safe and effective method of application because of the sophisticated physiologic processes of our bodies.
When ingested, essential oils directly enter the blood stream via the gastrointestinal tract, where they are transported throughout the rest of the body. Essential oils are lipid soluble so they are readily transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. Then, like all things we consume, essential oils are metabolized by the liver and other organs and are then excreted. You may use the oils internally if the bottle has supplement facts.
